About REEF CHECK OMAN
Reef Check Oman is an Omani endeavour, started in 2017 and run by Omanis for Omanis. Our goal is to preserve our country's coral reefs, which are not only beautiful, but also the foundation of local livelihoods, sustainable tourism and traditional ways of life.
HISTORY
The history of Reef Check Oman starts when Biosphere Expeditions, an international conservation organisation, started running annual reef research and conservation expeditions to the Musandam Peninsual in 2009. The expeditions included a placement programme to train Omanis in Reef Check techniques. Over the space of several years, this resulted in a critical mass of local divers being trained as Reef Check EcoDivers (those who can conduct surveys) and Reef Check Trainers (those who can train others to become reef surveyors). We conducted the first-ever Oman community-based survey in early 2017 and later that year decided to found Reef Check Oman.
about reef check worldwide
Founded in 1996, the Reef Check Foundation exists to help preserve the oceans and reefs, which are critical to our survival, yet are being destroyed. With headquarters in Los Angeles and volunteer teams in more than 90 countries and territories, Reef Check works to protect tropical coral reefs and California rocky reefs through education, research and conservation.
Reef Check carries out its work through two major programmes: (1) The EcoDiver Programme – an education and certification program for divers who want to learn more about the ocean and take part in protecting reef ecosystems. (2) Coral Reef Management Programme – a coral reef monitoring and management system that focuses on establishing Marine Protected Areas to conserve coral reefs, while encouraging sustainable use of surrounding reefs by local residents.
